Hello. MV Design Team Member Jen here, filling in for our DT leader April while she gets some well-deserved R&R. However, April's layouts are in Memory Makers Magazine's October issue on pages 90 and 101! Congratulations, April!!!

Back at the store, Technique Tuesday stamps and accessories have been restocked, including the very fabulous Technique Tuesday Cleaning Spray and Scrubber. The cleaning system was designed for clear stamps, but even better, it works great on ALL stamps! Including those especially difficult ones to clean - Making Memories Magnetic Stamps. In the picture above, you can see what my MM Magnetic Stamps looked like before I tried the Tech Tuesday cleaning system, and oh so pretty cleaned up afterwards. Lots of old ink piled up on them and sat there for months because there wasn't a convenient way to clean those tiny parts. With the Tech Tuesday cleaning system, you just keep the stamps on the handle, brush it back and forth on the wet side of the scrubber, brush the handle with stamps on the dry side, and then, if you'd like, blot with a paper towel to dry. No fuss, no piles of baby wipes or paper towels, and easy to store too. So awesome.

MV Design Team Member Monica Laabs created this sweet layout of her daughter and we were astounded by it's overall meaning. This layout speaks her mother's love in so many languages. In Spanish, both in a mother's handwriting and Arte Latin-Oh! papers. In symbols and color - pink, the color of baby girls and love and hearts (very geniusly layered on a ghost frame, we might add!). In a favorite American past time, scrapbooking itself, that has been growing all over the world. We promised that the Arte Latin-Oh! Ritm-O (Reggaeton and Dembow) and new CHA Summer 2006 7gypsies and Autumn Leaves products would be up within a few days. MV's resident computer guru had them up on site, in stock, and ready to ship in less than 24 hours! We love that manufacturers are helping us out with journaling in this fresh crop of scrapbook supplies. Personally, incorporating journaling into a layout can be the toughest part of scrapbooking. Sometimes, I've even forgotten to put a date and place in a layout, which leaves me wondering, when did we do that? When did I make that? Symbolism in Scrapbooking

Flowers can be so symbolic. The Victorians gave flowers as special messages, and the symbolic code was quite complex. Dwarf sunflowers meant "adoration", tall sunflowers meant "haughtiness", and hydrangeas said a whole sentence! They meant "Thank you for understanding me". We use symbols in our scrapbooks - in hearts, stars, crosses, flags, and, yes, flowers. They're so much fun to use in our scrapbooks because they add new levels of meaning to scrapbook layouts and cards. They are powerful in their own right - they say so much without journalling.

And they can be absolutely beautiful, such as Dove of the East's Jumping Carp, which, according to our research, can symbolize joyful unions, revitalization, life, and prosperity. The Double Dragons, holding up the pearl, can symbolize power, prosperity, creativity, and energy. Is the current heat wave blanketing the country making you tired? Memory Villa designer Wendy Price re-energized us and inspire us to scrap with these fun new layouts!!! The color combination is HOT but refreshing as well, with a cool white background, fabulous Arctic Frog patterned papers, and great photography! Notice that Wendy zoomed in close to her subjects, and didn't center her photos perfectly. The unexpected composition actually draws the viewer in while the eye unconsciously fills in the rest of the photograph. Maybe it's not too hot to take a few photos outside after all...

A little GASC Fun...

A few of the girls from the Memoryvilla Design Team and several other friends met up at The Great American Scrapbook Convention in Arlington, Texas this past June! We attended the main crop each night and decided to try our luck at the Friday night table decorating crop contest! To our surprise we won! We even got to meet the Memory Makers Magazine editorial director Jeanne Wines-Reed and she graciously took a picture with us! Below are some pictures of our table decorations. I'm still waiting on some more pics, but I will be posting more GASC pics and info about the convention soon!

(Our table centerpiece was a beautiful cake created from wooden boxes and cardstock made by Larolin (owner of Paperdillies), and decorated with patterned paper, jewels, hot pink tulle, and flowers created for the top!)

( Melanie made each of us a personalized place mat that also included an awesome psalm from the bible on handicrafts! We also each had a princess crown and a princess wand made from our favorite manufacturers papers and labeled with our princess name.)

Greetings fellow scrappers: Quite a bit happening in the month to come. In a week or so, we will post another survey (which will be a semi-annual event I guess) to try and gather more information from our users. This one will run through August 20th. We like to keep abreast of what you want, what you need, what you think, and what direction we should go with MemoryVilla..... Background paper - Imagination Project, Sutton Place, Pampano
Screws -Making Memories

Helicopter - This was printed from the computer on to a transparent sheet, cut out and put though a Xyron machine to make the back sticky and then I used metallic powders by MoonGlow, and dusted over the sticky side. I then ran the picture back through the Xyron and attached it to a light blue cardstock. I attached brads that look like screws.

I printed the greeting on light blue cardstock and used a blue ribbon by Offray which I highlighted with a bit of blue glitter glue by Stickles.

These ladies did a lovely job using new papers from Sandylion and Imagination Project! Notice how Melanie cut out the big pink flower from a sandy lion paper, then adhered it to her layout and embellished it! Julie added her title directly over the photos to draw your attention away from negative space at the bottom of the photos! And Nancy did an awesome job with the helicopter and has included instructions on how to get the same effect as she did!

Wendy's layout above is a perfect example of how scrapping your fears can actually help you relate to them and possibly feel a sense of relief or accomplishment when it comes to conquering them! Our design team member LeAnne Bull has done a wonderful job on the layouts above! She almost always scraps 9x9 and most definitely has her own unique style!

Things to notice:

1. On LeAnne's "Girlfriends" layout, she cut flowers from the Gin X paper and then used Heidi Swapp colored pencils to color them and added extra doodling around them to give them some extra pizazz!

2. LeAnne has used her White Sharpie to doodle directly onto the photo. This added an instant frame and really played up her prima flowers!

3. LeAnne has added pink acrylic paint directly to the edges of her photo ...giving it a unique touch and lending to a dreamy quality which enhances the theme of her layout!

We love the playful mood in Monica's layouts -- you can't help but smile at the fun photos and layered stamps and rub-ons.

Monica customized Autumn Leaves Clear Button stamps with alcohol inks. What a fantastic way to get more out of buttons! She added more unique details to her layout by using ephemera (the postage) and layering the Chatterbox Alpha Transparency letters "we" with a rub-on. She embellished that precious photo of intense, happy, funny-face concentration beautifully!

If you take a little closer look at Gatita, notice the genius use of lines and circles to keep the layout flowing. The horizontal lines bring your eye directly to the top photo of daughter's favorite kitty, while the circles and scalloped edge serve as a base, suggestive of a pillow, helping to tell the visual story. The text is placed vertically across the page, in groupings. They not only pull the two photos together, they also guide the eye, with handwritten journaling finishing off the bottom corner. The effect: A fun, energetic layout, with perfect flow to help the viewer enjoy every exquisite detail.

Incredible Edible Egg

Lynn Anne won the contest for the most inventive use of the printable image on the Scrapbook Answers disc for April 2006. She choose the eggs, then changed the hue digitally and printed out a few versions, printed them out on Prism's white metallic cardstock, and cut egg shapes from them to frame the word 'egg' (Heidi Swapp ghost letters rimmed with white paint).

Shawna did a wonderful job on this layout! The colors are bright and fun and just draw you right in! She used a mixture of papers and embellishments to highlight this adorable picture and even used a Heidi Swapp fuzzy rub on for the title! By using a black and white photo, she allowed the colors and embellishments to shine but not overpower her own photo ...which your eyes are still drawn to because of the contrast! Great layout Shawna!

Special techniques: I scanned a large silk flower, edited the color using Picture It software, and then printed it out on transparency film.

*The majority of scrapbookers spend most of their time scrapping their family members, friends, and events, but rarely spend time making pages about themselves. Think about how your ideas, likes, and dislikes, style, etc... all change over time. If you create those pages now, you and your family will be able to look back one day and talk about what was meaningful and important to you then. Creating pages about yourself is extremely worthwhile, not only for your own self discovery and reminiscing, but for your family members and loved ones in the years to come!

Just thought I would share one of my most favorite and meaningful layouts with you.

Life In Slow Motion

Layout Journaling reads:

On August 30th, 2003 - just a little over a week after Charlie had been born, Charlie's temperature reached 104 degrees and we rushed her to the emergency room. Several hours later she was admitted into Saint Edwards Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith Arkansas. The hospital let me stay in her room with her and after a week they came to the conclusion that she had contracted Viral Meningitis. The day before we were scheduled to go home, everything seemed fine until the doctor came running into our room and said he had some bad news. He told me that Children's Hospital didn't like what they had seen on echocardiogram and they wanted to fly her to Arkansas Children's Hospital right away. At this point Scott and I were really scared. An hour later we drove out of the hospital parking lot and watched Charlie's helicopter (Angel One) take off. We had a three hour drive ahead of us and could only hope that everything would be okay until we got there. We arrived at the hospital at 2:30 a.m. exhausted and worried. When I finally got to see her, I didn't know what to think or feel. She had tubes coming out of her everywhere, she was extremely pale, and suddenly looked so fragile. The doctor told us that Charlie had developed Myocarditis from the viral meningitis. They said that a normal child's heart would have an ejection fraction of about 25-30, and Charlie's was 12. Her heart was enlarged, inflamed, and had lots of fluid around it. No one had any idea how sick she had been, and now everything was just crashing down around us. For the next several days they had Charlie on heart medicines, sedatives, and pleconaril (an experimental drug that everyone hoped was going to make the difference). At one point they tried taking Charlie off of her ventilator, but her throat swelled almost to the point that she couldn't breathe, so they had to put it back in. Everything seemed to be moving in Slow Motion and most days I just had a feeling of numbness. After a week of showing hardly any signs of improvement, amazingly Charlie excavated herself. Everyone was really surprised and to our amazement she seemed fine. She got a little better each day as they slowly decreased her meds, and eventually took out her IV, which left only her feeding tube. On Thursday the 18, exactly a month after Charlie had been born, we rejoiced when they told us she was well enough to move to the heart floor for the remainder of her recovery. Scott and I were both able to room with her and she was even allowed to have guests. After making such a miraculous recovery, we were finally able to take our baby girl home on Monday September 22, 2003. A year later she was taken off of her heart medicine and the doctor said that she was in perfect shape and you would never have known that she had been so sick just a year earlier. Without the help of Arkansas Children's Hospital, and the support and prayers from our family and friends, we wouldn 't have our little angel with us today. Each day I make sure to slow down, appreciate what we have, and thank god for our little miracle!

Hidden Journaling reads:

When Scott and I first walked into the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, we couldn't hold back our tears. They had covered Charli 's eyes, had tied her down, and I couldn't even count the tubes coming out of her. They had already given her a blood transfusion and she was now on a respirator to help her breathe. When I asked the doctor how this could have happened he simply said bad luck. Bad luck? What kind of answer was that? Here I had survived nine months of pregnancy, a c-section, had finally gotten to bring my new baby girl home and now I was facing leaving the hospital without my newborn because of bad luck. How were we going to get through this? The minutes went by like hours and the days felt like years. We knew after talking with the doctors that we needed a miracle, and we had no idea if our prayers were going to be answered. But fortunately we were in luck , because a miracle was exactly what we received.

I truly believe Miracles are all around us and happen daily. Try scrapping about some of your own personal or family miracles or maybe events that are somewhat sensitive. You may find it a very healing experience! -April Derrick

Altering Priority Shipping Boxes...

Just about anything can be altered to create something pretty, fun, and useful. In this article, Jennifer shares with us her techniques for altering the shipping boxes she has laying around the house.

"I wanted storage and also wanted to show off some of my favorite papers -- Basic Grey's Motifica and Sublime Papers and 7gypsies Journey papers. I mod-podged my favorite papers on until I was happy with the colors. I went a little nuts on the Tim Holtz Walnut Stain ink – I should have used Antique Linen and just accented with Walnut Stain, but the experimentation is part of the fun."

Simple, Inexpensive, and just Beautiful!

Delight

Heidi Swapp colored pencils

I blew up this photo to 8x10, turned it to sepia and then printed it on white denim. Next I ravelled the edges and then started with the rest of the page elements.

I used those new Technique Tuesday petal pushers stamps and made a collage of flowers on the edge using black, green and blue inks. I then colored them in using my Heidi Swapp colored pencils, ran them all thru the xyron X machine and adhered them to the photo. Then I DOODLED!!! I used my fine tip green zig pen, and made lil swirlies and leafy looking things all around the flowers.
Finally, I used the Doodlebug rubons as inspiration and drew the "delight" lightly in pencil, then went back and hand stitched over it with lime green sewing thread, and dotted the "I" with a Queen and Co sassy sequin!

This page is so simple, yet had a lot of techniques in it...and I did not use very much product, so all in all was a very inexpensive project. (Melanie Stout)

I painted one of the CBX Love tags blue to match the blues in the papers.

Notice what's different about this layout?? Wendy stepped outside of the box and used the color Pink to scrap a boy layout! Doesn't it look cool!! We love how she kept her son's shirt in blue and kept the rest of the photo in black and white. This makes the photos just pop off the page and immediately draws your eye to them as well. We love Wendy's creativity and always look forward to seeing her designs!

Our Design Team member Shawna Webster recently created this super cool family layout using older 7Gypsy papers. This layout is just the first in our series of "Older products revisited". With the scrapbooking market growing as rapidly as it is, one can hardly begin to keep up with all of the new products. Unfortunately, it's a lot like computers ....you walk into a store and purchase a new one only to find out it's already six months outdated!

Everyone wants to get their hands on the all of the newest collections, leaving everything else...even the new products that came out just a few months before ... in the dust. I know I am constantly purchasing new papers only to look back and find that I never used the new ones I bought a short time ago. Memory Villa recently asked the design team to create their magic using products that weren't necessarily considered brand new, to show that even though they may not have debuted at the most recent trade show, they are still completely capable of producing truly inspiring scrapbook layouts!

It seems like I'm always collecting new things, but not really using them ....One of my personal goals this year is to use all of my untouched scrapbook papers and emellishments and to actually create something with them instead of just hoarding them!

The above layout created by Shawna may have been created using older products, but it surely doesn't look like it! To me, it looks exactly like something I would see in a current scrapbooking magazine! She did an amazing job with this layout and we truly admire her scrapbooking ability to make new and "Old" look wonderful!

This cute little mini book was created by our MemoryVilla Design team member Melanie. This is a great idea for scrappers everywhere. Create a simple mini album to note your dreams and goals for the upcoming year. Putting all of your goals down in writing will not only serve as a reminder for you throughout the year, but it will also turn into a treasured keepsake for you and your family to look back at in the future!! Supplies and instructions:

-Background 7 Gypsies - Fleur Rouge sanded lightly on the edges for aging.
-Artwork was printed from Printshop 21 on a cream vellum, matted on Daisyd's Lace Collage and Chatterbox - Rosey Powder Plaid, using the solid pink side. Mattes were aged some using Ranger distress ink in Old Paper.
-Lace is from Joann's
-Brads from Making Memories
-Letters and heart cut from the Lace Collage paper, other heart cut from double sided sticky paper and dusted with very fine glitter in gold, silver and a touch of lite blue.

Our Creative Card maker is at it again! Nancy turned out these beautiful Valentine cards this month and we just had to share them with you! Wonder who the lucky recipients of these will be????

A New Year's layout to start the New Year!

Wishin' and Hopin'...

This was one of my entries for last year's Hall of Fame contest, and I thought this might be a good time to bring it out of hiding with the new year and all. I am sooooo glad that I created this layout because I probably would have never done a layout like this if it hadn't have been for the contest. I was reading this the other day for the first time since I made it, and I was amazed to find that several of my hopes, wishes, goals, and dreams have come true since then. Of course I still don't have a dishwasher...... but, I was so happy with this layout that I think I will start making one every year....so I'll just carry the dishwasher over to this year's!!! Below I have included the rest of the hidden journaling and pics. This is definitely something I would challenge all scrapbookers to create for themselves...trust me you will be glad you did!! SO fun and easy to make... I used all my paper scraps to make this, and just added stickers and lots of ribbon to dress this up! Makes a fantastic and inexpensive, but very nice gift.. and only took about 2 hours to make!

To make this planner, I used a cheap black/white school journal (from Wal-Mart). I made the side tabs from left over scraps of black bazzill cardstock. I made this back in November, and since I'm a list maker, I have used it almost every day!

MemoryVilla Future Crop Suggestions...

MemoryVilla would like to start holding an annual crop sometime in the spring. It would probably be located somewhere in Central Arkansas, and we would like to make it a two day or weekend event. We would love to hear any and all suggestions on what you think makes a good crop. Even if you do not live in Arkansas and could not attend, we would still love to hear your suggestions. What a great layout! Simple yet gorgeous! We love how Wendy used several different Basic Grey papers to bring this layout to life! It goes perfectly with the photo which she kept in black and white, yet highlighted the toy by keeping it in color. By adding the colored mini brads, she effectively tied all of the colors together. Great Job Wendy!

Why aren't the Scrapbook stores carrying the new products from Memory Trends?

Have you been looking for that new Heidi Swapp product? Can't find Chatterbox's new labeler? Waiting to get your hands on all the cool new stuff that just debuted at Memory Trends in October? Well, here's the reason why you can't find it in the stores yet. When events like Memory Trends and HIA come to town, manufacturers showcase their newest lines, and latest products for retailers to ogle over and order. The Scrapbooking magazines start giving the general public glimpses of what's coming months before these big events even take place. This gets everyone really excited and then we start looking for these new products at our local scrapbook stores and favorite online stores. But guess what? Their not there! Why you ask?

A lot of the time, manufacturers wait until they get their first orders at these big shows before they even make the orders or start manufacturing the products themselves. When retailers make their orders, they are generally told that they will not be receiving the products for at least another couple of months. Now don't get me wrong, not all manufacturers allow this to happen. Some are really quick to ship their new items and get them into the public, but the majority are not so quick. In fact, we are still waiting on certain products that debuted at HIA this summer! Also, you will find that scrapbook papers in general are out in the stores a lot sooner than those fantastic new embellishments. Why? Well, the answer is simple, most manufacturers actually manufacturer their own paper, but their embellishments are made overseas. With security today, sometimes other products are given priority over scrapbook embellishments by customs, therefore taking longer to come in. Customers browse online stores and their local scrapbook stores wondering why they haven't gotten the latest in yet, when really it's a matter of waiting on the manufacturers to ship the orders and they may not even have their hands on the products themselves.

Unfortunately, there's not much we can do about any of this, as scrapbook companines will continue to advertise products that are possibly months away from becoming available to the public. However, once you become aware of the situation, you can set your mind at ease and know that you will still have the chance to purchase those unbelievably cool new scrapbooking products....it just might be a lot later than you thought!

-Your entries will not be shown to the public, so feel free to enter layouts that are being considered for publication, or contests, etc...

-Please include your name, address, phone, and email with your entries.

-Contest will end on December 20th, at midnight.

-Suggested file size is 80 - 350kb, but there aren't any limits.

-All contestants will be notified of contest results shortly after contest ends.
